McEvoy reportedly to start at QB for Badgers

When Wisconsin lines up to battle LSU in the season opener at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Joel Stave won't be under center.

Gary AndersenUS PRESSWIREGary Andersen has reportedly selected Tanner McEvoy to start vs. LSU.

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Badgers head coach Gary Andersen has selected 2013 JUCO transfer and former South Carolina redshirt Tanner McEvoy to be the starting quarterback. The dual-threat beat out fellow junior Stave, who was trying to retain the starting job he had in 2013 when he tossed 22 touchdowns but threw 13 interceptions.

The 6-6, 222-pound McEvoy was moved to safety last preseason camp and made three starts at the position, but he was moved back to quarterback and had a strong spring this offseason. Despite having an uneven start to fall camp, McEvoy evidently made up enough ground to give Andersen and his offensive staff confidence in his starting abilities. He gives the Badgers more athleticism at the position, but the offensive game plan will likely be a bit simplified. In his lone season at Arizona Western, he passed for 1,943 yards and 25 touchdowns and rushed for 414 yards and six scores.

Wisconsin is not expected to make a public statement about the decision, however, as Andersen said earlier in the week that there won't be a big announcement. It would not be at all surprising to see Stave at some point, however, as Andersen has said that both quarterbacks deserve to play this season.

Andersen had great success at Utah State with dual-threat Chuckie Keeton. Can McEvoy provide similar game-changing ability on a consistent basis in Madison?
