Michigan pursuing a graduate transfer quarterback
As MLive Media Group's Kyle Meinke writes, the Wolverines do not have a healthy scholarship backup for Gardner after sophomore Russell Bellomy sustained an ACL injury that is expected to sideline him this season, so head coach Brady Hoke and his staff are looking to add one before late June.
The only scholarship player behind Gardner in preseason camp will be true freshman Shane Morris. The other reserves are walk-ons Brian Cleary and Alex Swieca.
"Yeah, we are [still looking]," Hoke said Monday before a luncheon in Grand Rapids. "But, it's one of those things where there's a lot of I's to dot and T's to cross to make sure it's the right fit."
Michigan was unable to land former Florida State quarterback Clint Trickett, who chose to play for Dana Holgorsen at West Virginia. Former Arkansas signal-caller Brandon Mitchell could be a possibility after he was unable to snag the starting job from Brandon Allen in spring drills. Hoke would prefer to land a quarterback by the start of summer term, which begins June 27.
Hoke said the program likely would add a graduate transfer rather than going the junior college route because of the school's more difficult requirements for a JUCO.
