Nebraska lineman out for the season

Nebraska offensive lineman Mike Smith will miss the entire 2010 season after breaking his leg.

Head coach Bo Pelini announced after Wednesday's practice that Smith, from Las Vegas, was hurt during a contact drill on Tuesday. The senior started 14 games at left tackle last season but was expected to be a backup at guard and center this year.

From a personnel standpoint, Pelini said the Huskers should be able to deal with the loss.

“We still have great competition,” Pelini said. “Really, not much has changed. Mike was kind of a swing guy. We were moving him to a number of different positions. So really, not a lot has changed.”

However, Smith was Nebraska’s most experienced offensive lineman, playing in 39 games since redshirting in 2006. No Husker lineman has more career starts (26) than Smith.
