Notre Dame continues to stockpile defensive talent
Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly continued to stockpile defensive talent over the weekend, reportedly landing a commitment from Asheville, N.C. linebacker Ben Councell for its 2011 class.
CBS College Sports analyst Tom Lemming ranks Councell as a four-star prospect while Rivals.com lists him as a three-star recruit and the No. 23 weakside defensive end prospect in the country.
According to Irish Sports Daily, Councell visited South Bend last week and made his pledge Sunday night. The 6-5, 225-pounder is the 12th member of the 2011 class after declining overtures from Auburn, North Carolina and West Virginia, among others.
The tall, athletic defensive end projects to play on the line and not shift to outside linebacker in Bob Diaco’s 3-4 scheme.
The Councell commitment follows the good news the Irish received less than two weeks ago when four-star Florida defensive end Clay Burton gave his verbal. Notre Dame is also in the running for another four-star defensive end from Florida, Aaron Lynch. Burton is projected to play outside linebacker in South Bend.
