Notre Dame lands pledge from athletic Missouri defender
Notre Dame added to its 2014 recruiting class on Wednesday when defensive end Jonathan Bonner gave a verbal pledge to the Fighting Irish.
The 6-4, 249-pounder from Parkway Central High School (Chesterfield, MO), who projects as an outside linebacker in South Bend, is a cousin of former Irish safety Sergio Brown.
The Irish weren't heavily recruiting Bonner up until he impressed at their camp this past weekend. The coaching staff quickly offered thereafter and he accepted.
Bonner, a Rivals.com three-star prospect who chose the Irish over programs such as Michigan State, Missouri and Purdue, recorded 64 tackles and 12 sacks on defense last season. He also had 12 receptions for 258 yards and seven touchdowns as a tight end. As a defender he is a good pass rusher and adept at setting the edge against the run. He seemingly is a good fit for Bob Diaco's 3-4 defense.
The Missouri native is the 13th member of ND's 2014 class and the second linebacker pledge, joining fellow linebacker Greer Martini. The Irish also have commitments from tackle Jay Hayes and end Andrew Trumbetti on defense.
