Penn State star defender out for the season

Penn State suffered a tough blow Saturday when starting linebacker Michael Mauti suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the team's game against Eastern Michigan. The school announced Sunday that the redshirt junior will miss the rest of the season.

Mauti, who was the Nittany Lions' leading tackler entering the weekend with 20 stops, has unfortunately dealt with a similar serious injury in the past, as he missed the 2009 season after tearing his right ACL.

Joe Paterno's squad will certainly miss Mauti's presence, as he had a career-high 13 tackles in the loss to Alabama earlier this season and had the interception that led to the winning touchdown against Temple the following week.

Penn State opens Big Ten play against Indiana this weekend.
