South Carolina DE Clowney suffers sprained ankle

South Carolina true freshman Jadeveon Clowney, who has been impressive throughout fall camp and was a force at last weekend's scrimmage, is expected to miss the next few practices after spraining his left ankle.

According to Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier, the defensive end was in midst of rushing the passer when he fell to the ground at practice Tuesday. The Head Ball Coach says the nation's top recruit this past February told him he has been bothered by left foot and ankle issues during his high school career.

Clowney is expected to miss the next couple of practices.

"He's been having a great camp," running back Marcus Lattimore told The Associated Press. "I know he'll get back in a hurry."

Starting defensive end Melvin Ingram also will miss the next few practices after suffering a bruised thigh Tuesday. However, Spurrier said both defenders should be ready for the team's season opener on Sept. 3 against East Carolina, a team that could pose problems for the Gamecocks if they are looking ahead to Georgia the following week.
