Texas A&M reportedly loses a backup QB to a transfer
Texas A&M has lost a quarterback from its roster.
No, it's not Johnny Manziel — not yet, at least.
According to multiple reports, freshman quarterback Matt Davis has informed head coach Kevin Sumlin that he intends to transfer.
With the departure of the dual-threat Davis, junior Matt Joeckel and freshman Kenny Hill are battling for the backup job behind Manziel, the Heisman Trophy winner whose status is still uncertain as the NCAA investigates whether he received money for signing a variety of memorabilia. Manziel has been at every practice, however, and it still appears that he will play when the Aggies open on August 31 against Rice at Kyle Field.
This is the second straight year that A&M lost a quarterback to a transfer, as Jameill Showers left for UTEP.
Davis reportedly was clearly not to the playing level of Joeckel and Hill during a scrimmage on Saturday night, so the transfer doesn't come as too much of a surprise. The question remains whether or not either of those two quarterbacks will be needed if Manziel has to sit at some point.
