Week 2 Big 12 power rankings

The 2012 college football season is off and running, and we’ve already had plenty of exciting action.

Every Monday during the season I will release league power rankings, which you can find under the College tab at the top of this page. The six BCS conferences will all have their own power rankings, while I will also rank the best of the non-BCS squads.

Since the first week of the season didn’t conclude until last night, the power rankings are being released today.

With that in mind, let's take a look at how the Big 12 shapes up:

1. Oklahoma: There's no question that the Sooners were underwhelming in their opening 24-7 win over UTEP. But at least the defense showed signs that it can be better, holding the Miners to 255 total yards. And that's a good way to start off the year under new DC Mike Stoops, who helped the team win a national title in 2000.

Geno SmithUS PRESSWIREQB Geno Smith and the Mountaineers rolled Marshall in Week 1.

2. West Virginia: The Mountaineers rolled rival Marshall behind senior quarterback Geno Smith's 323 yards and four touchdowns. But the defense did give up 545 total yards to the Thundering Herd.

3. TCU: The Horned Frogs have not yet begun their season and will host Grambling State this week.

4. Kansas State: The Wildcats were only up on Missouri State 9-6 at halftime before pulling away with 35 points in the fourth quarter to break things open.

5. Texas: David Ash threw 27 passes without an interception, which was a big step for the sophomore in the team's win over Wyoming.

6. Oklahoma State: True freshman Wes Lunt had a brief debut as the new starting quarterback in Stillwater because the Cowboys simply overwhelmed Savannah State. The Pokes' 84-point shutout was never in doubt.

7. Baylor: New starting quarterback Nick Florence threw for 341 yards and four touchdowns as Baylor rolled SMU.

8. Texas Tech: The Red Raiders defense shut down the Northwestern State rushing game, and quarterback Seth Doege led scoring drives on five of eight possessions in the win.

9. Iowa State: With a win over Tulsa in the books, can Paul Rhoads and the Cyclones beat the Hawkeyes in Iowa City this week?

10. Kansas: Former Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist hit former Fighting Irish teammate Mike Ragone on a short touchdown pass as the Jayhawks began the Charlie Weis era with a win over South Dakota State.
