Wegher absent from practice at Iowa

It looks like Iowa may have to dip into its running back depth a little bit sooner than expected.

A source told The (Cedar Rapids) Gazette that Brandon Wegher has been absent from the team's football camp since Saturday night and his playing status is uncertain.

The sophomore shot down recent rumors about his academics at Iowa’s media day on Friday.

Head coach Kirk Ferentz declined to comment on the matter. He will address the media after Saturday’s open scrimmage at Kinnick Stadium.

Wegher appeared in every game last season — including making two starts — and set a team freshman record with eight rushing touchdowns. He was expected to compete with Adam Robinson and Jewel Hampton for the team’s starting running back spot.

He finished ’09 with 641 rushing yards and 967 all-purpose yards, including 113 yards and a touchdown on the ground in Iowa's Orange Bowl victory against Georgia Tech.
