Asante Samuel is headed to Atlanta

Asante Samuel’s time in Philadelphia has officially come to an end.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Pro Bowl cornerback has agreed to terms on a three-year, $18.5 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons. At the current moment, it’s still unknown what the Philadelphia Eagles have received in return for trading Samuel to Atlanta.

Asante SamuelSo long, Philadelphia. Asante Samuel is headed for Atlanta.

The move brings the 31-year-old cornerback’s four-year stint in Philadelphia to an end. During that time, Samuel recorded 23 interceptions and made three trips to the Pro Bowl. But he grew disgruntled with the organization during a 2011 offseason that saw the Eagles acquire cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

Under his old contract, Samuel was scheduled to make $21.5 million over the next two seasons. The hefty price tag in addition to giving up draft picks made it a given that Samuel would have to restructure his deal if he wanted out of Philadelphia.

The Falcons now move forward with Samuel and Brent Grimes holding down the cornerback positions along with William Moore and Thomas DeCoud at the safety spots, which should make for a formidable secondary in the NFC South.
