Combine bettors back Ford, get burned by Tebow
Jacoby Ford’s trainer told Bruce Feldman of ESPN.com last week that he thought the Clemson wide receiver had a very good shot of taking down Chris Johnson’s 4.24 40-yard-dash combine record.
While Ford failed in his quest to knock the Titans running back from his place in history, he was still fast enough for many of the bettors out there to make a score.
On the flip side, as popular of a player/person as Tim Tebow is, the bettors didn’t think he could run a faster 40 than Colt McCoy.
They were wrong.
I had the opportunity to talk with Dave Staley of Sportsbook.com last week about some of the prop bets his website was offering for the NFL combine. We posted some of the more interesting options last Wednesday and since the combine officially wrapped up on Tuesday, I decided to check back in with Dave to see which way the action went and how the bettors made out.
Here are some of the more popular combine bets from the weekend:
Fastest 40-yard-dash at the combine
Over/Under: 4.31 seconds
The line opened at 4.31 seconds and was moved to 4.27 seconds. According to Staley, there was “heavy” under wagering when the line was at 4.31. Jacoby Ford’s 4.28 got the early bettors paid.
Who will run the faster 40?
Tim Tebow (opened at EVEN, closed at +150)
Colt McCoy (opened at -125, closed at -155)
Upset city as the public money favored the Texas quarterback, moving the line from -125 to -155 at close. Tebow’s 4.72 vs. McCoy’s 4.89 paved the way for the house to get back at the public. According to Staley, “this was the biggest winner for the house as folks pounded McCoy.”
Who will run the faster 40: C.J. Spiller vs. Jahvid Best
Line: Opened at Spiller -130, closed at Spiller -155
The bettors loved Spiller, but at the end of the day it was the shifty California running back that crossed the line first. Best came home in 4.35 while Spiller posted a 4.37. Another win for the house.
Who will run the faster 40: Dexter McCluster vs. Golden Tate
Line: Opened at -115 (both sides), closed at McCluster -125
McCluster and the public get smoked as Tate posts a solid 4.42 while the Ole Miss runner/rusher crosses the line in a disappointing 4.58.
For those of you who may have missed out on the action over combine weekend, don’t worry. Staley assured me that Sportsbook.com is going to have a boatload of props for the NFL Draft.
As always, I’ll keep ya posted.
