For your consideration: 16 fantasy waiver wire pickups
Maurice Morris, RB, Detroit Lions: After the newly-acquired Kevin Smith tore the Carolina Panthers to shreds two weeks ago, we’d imagine many Morris owners sent the Detroit running back packing. But with Jahvid Best done for the season and Smith battling an ankle injury, Morris could be in line for a heavy workload in Week 13 at New Orleans. We don’t expect big-time numbers, but with the slew of injuries that has hit the running back position as of late, Morris could make for a solid flex option this weekend.
Next up: at New Orleans
Caleb Hanie, QB, Chicago Bears: Yes, Hanie threw three interceptions and completed only 50% of his passes in Week 12 at Oakland, but the three-year veteran also racked up two touchdowns and 254 passing yards. Don’t be shocked if Hanie rolls up a solid stat line Sunday when the Chiefs come to town, as Kansas City is surrendering an average of 18.6 fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks this season.
Next up: Kansas City
Johnny Knox, WR, Chicago Bears: Speaking of the Bears, hit up the waiver wire to see if wideout Johnny Knox is currently available. After going scoreless through the first nine games of the season, the three-year veteran has found the end zone in each of his last two games while posting 243 receiving yards on 15 targets. There’s a good chance Knox’s previous owner jumped ship a few weeks ago.
Next up: Kansas City
Donald Brown, RB, Indianapolis Colts: The situation in Indy has been nothing short of disastrous this season, but Brown has been a flickering bright spot as of late, finding the end zone in three of his last six games while averaging a healthy 15.75 touches per outing. He’ll be inconsistent the rest of the way due to a stumbling offense, but Brown should see plenty of targets this Sunday in New England against the Patriots’ suspect defense.
Next up: at New England
ICONMike Williams is finally starting to heat up.
Mike Williams, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: I’ll admit, I’ve been very critical of Williams’ lack of production this year following his breakout rookie campaign. But the bottom line is that the guy scored only one touchdown over the first nine games of the season, which could have been enough to trigger a release from his original owner. If that’s the case in your league, make a move because Williams is starting to heat up. The former Syracuse product has found the end zone in each of his last two games while recording 167 receiving yards on 13 receptions (22 targets).
Next up: vs. Carolina
Kyle Orton, QB, Kansas City Chiefs: It may take some time for Orton to get on the same page as wide receivers Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston and Jonathan Baldwin, but once that happens, there is definitely some upside here. However, don’t be surprised if the former Bear struggles this Sunday in Chicago…assuming he gets the start. The Bears’ backs are against the wall and they need to come out firing if they plan on qualifying for the postseason. But that doesn’t mean Orton is a bad QB2 option moving forward.
Next up: at Chicago
Harry Douglas, WR, Atlanta Falcons: Douglas has appeared in this column before, but his name is worth repeating after another solid performance, this time against the Minnesota Vikings (2-45-1). Douglas has been targeted 23 times over his last three games and becomes one of quarterback Matt Ryan’s key targets when rookie Julio Jones is out of the lineup. He won’t roll up monster numbers moving forward, but we think Douglas makes for a respectable WR4/5 for owners in leagues with 12 or more teams.
Next up: at Houston
Peyton Hillis, RB, Cleveland Browns: Check to see if Hillis’ original owner bailed on him after his five-game absence due to a hamstring injury. If so, scoop him up because Hillis may have finally realized he’s playing in a contract year and needs to post some big numbers if he wants to land a fat new contract on the open market next February. The Browns gave him 19 carries Sunday at Cincinnati, so if he’s healthy, we expect Hillis to handle the bulk of the workload moving forward.
Next up: vs. Baltimore
