LAS VEGAS—It’s a relatively quiet morning here at the new Cantor Race & Sports Book inside the Palms Hotel & Casino. As I sit here typing (yes, you are allowed to bring your computers and iPads into the book), I see just two other people watching the hi-def televisions and looking over Wednesday’s matchups.

All of that is likely to change in a few hours.

On Wednesday morning, Cantor Gaming—who, in addition to the Palms, operates the sportsbooks at the Venetian and Lagasse’s Stadium, Hard Rock, Cosmopolitan, Tropicana and M Resort—became the first shop in the business to release point spreads for the 240 games that take place from Week 1 to Week 16.

“This is the fourth year we’ve done the NFL lines for Weeks 1-16 of the NFL season,” Cantor Gaming Sportsbook Director Mike Colbert told the National Football Post Tuesday evening. “We do it is because it generates so much interest and allows people who may be in Vegas this summer to make their bets for the season if they don’t plan on coming back.”

Wagering is currently capped at $2,000 per game, but Colbert says that number will be increased to $5,000 per game as we get closer to the start of the season.

Betting regular season games this early in the year brings a certain level of risk, but it also offers the opportunity to beat the public to the best number. Not only that, but locking in a good price in May could mean opening the door for a middle opportunity down the road, should the spread move a significant amount of points prior to kickoff.

“Sharp guys always think they’re stealing a point,” said Colbert. “It’s a chess match I really enjoy.”
