Manning inks for $96 million over five years

Close to one year after signing a five-year, $90 million contract with the Indianapolis Colts, Peyton Manning has landed himself another monster payday.

Peyton ManningICONNew team, same big-time money.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Broncos and Manning have put the finishing touches on a five-year deal that’s worth $96 million. Our own Andrew Brandt recently tweeted that the contract will pay Manning $18 million in 2012 and includes an injury waiver based on a 2013 physical.

More details about the contract are sure to surface throughout the day, such as the amount of guaranteed money the former Colt is set to receive and what type of provisions the Broncos have included in the event Manning is unable to play this season. After all, the 35-year-old did undergo four neck surgeries over the last year.

Now the attention should turn to Saints quarterback Drew Brees and his upcoming mega deal. Brees was hit with the franchise tag at the beginning of the month, but many in the industry believe that the Saints will eventually reach an agreement on a long-term contract with their star quarterback.

And since Brees’ agent (Tom Condon) is the same guy that just landed Manning $96 million, you can bet he’ll be looking for the same type of money for a signal-caller who is three years younger, has the same amount of Super Bowl wins and hasn’t undergone four surgeries in the last year.
