Motown movement

Entering the 2013 offseason, Lions head coach Jim Schwartz had a big problem that needed to be addressed. His team had ranked 23rd or worse in rushing in each of the past four seasons and 2010 first round draft pick Jahvid Best hadn’t taken a meaningful snap since October of 2011. The organization had thunder in 233-pound back Mikel Leshoure, but it desperately needed some lightning.

Enter Reggie Bush.

Reggie BushAfter two seasons in Miami, Reggie Bush has signed with the Detroit Lions.

Less than 24 hours after the start of the 2013 free agency period, the Lions came to an agreement on a four-year deal with former Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush, per ESPN. The move gives the Detroit offense and quarterback Matthew Stafford an additional element of firepower in their quest to get back to the postseason.

After five underwhelming years with the New Orleans Saints, Bush raised his game over the past two seasons with Miami, amassing 2,660 total yards and 15 touchdowns in 31 games. More importantly, the former USC standout averaged a healthy 4.7 yards per carry during his time with the Dolphins.

The move should aid in taking some of the pressure off of franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford’s shoulders, as Bush will be an immediate boost to both Detroit’s rushing and passing attack. The 28-year-old running back is averaging 4.08 receptions per game for his career, with a yards per reception average of 7.3.

The Bush signing highlights a busy two days for the Detroit front office. Since the market opened on Tuesday, the Lions have acquired defensive tackle Jason Jones and re-signed cornerback Chris Houston, safety Amari Spievy and wide receiver Kassim Osgood.

Of course, the Lions are still expected to lose free agents Cliff Avril (DE) and Louis Delmas (S).

Detroit currently holds the fifth-overall selection in April’s draft. At the moment, the prevailing thought is that the team will look to upgrade their secondary by drafting Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner.

Update: It's a four-year deal worth a total of $16 million.
