NFP power rankings

Sunday afternoon marked the fourth consecutive week in which the New England Patriots played a game that was decided by four or fewer points. After falling short at Carolina 24-20 back in Week 11, New England rattled off two straight three-point victories against Denver and Houston before coming from behind in the final seconds to knock off the Cleveland Browns 27-26 on Sunday.

Normally, a three-game winning streak would be cause for a rise in our power rankings, but the season-ending knee injury suffered by Pro Bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski on Sunday has the Patriots slipping from third (89.0) to sixth (87.5) this week.

In the six contests the Patriots have played without Gronkowski this season, the offense has averaged 20.8 points and 348.8 total yards per game. In the seven outings with Gronkowski on the field, New England has averaged 32.0 points and 417.7 total yards per game.

So while the loss of a tight end might not mean all that much to some teams around the league, in New England, it could signal the end of the Patriots’ Super Bowl chances.

The numbers in brackets indicate each team’s Power Ranking, which is based on a scale of 1-100. These numbers can be used as a baseline to determine the point spread between any two teams on the list. Keep in mind that these numbers do not account for home field advantage, situational analysis (extra rest, back-to-back road games, divisional rivalries, etc), injuries, weather or public perception. They are merely to be used as a baseline for your initial analysis.
