Niners expected to retain Carlos Rogers

After the San Francisco 49ers made a move to bring in troubled cornerback Perrish Cox on Tuesday, many felt the team was simply addressing a need in preparation for losing one of the defense’s more productive members.

Instead, the Niners have figured out a way to hang out to free agent cornerback Carlos Rogers.

While nothing is official as of yet, Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports that Rogers and the 49ers are closing in on a deal that will pay the 30-year-old an average of close to $7.3 million per year.

That may look like a big price tag for a cornerback set to turn 31-years-old in July, but Rogers is coming off the best season of his seven-year career. In 16 starts, the former Auburn standout recorded 43 tackles and a career-high six interceptions.

Next up should be a contract for free agent quarterback Alex Smith.
