Rams schedule private workout for Bradford on April 19
As Sam Bradford attempts to solidify his place as the draft’s top quarterback at Monday’s pro day in Norman, the team that holds the top pick is already preparing for another, more in-depth look.
Per a report from Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com, the St. Louis Rams will conduct a private workout for Bradford on April 19, just three days before the start of the 2010 NFL draft.
The interesting thing to note here is that Mortensen’s sources tell him the Rams won’t make a final decision on whether or not to draft Bradford until after the workout, giving them just three days to get a deal signed before the team loses its leverage.
If Bradford is selected first overall without a contract already in place, he would be in a position of power. The 22-year-old could stage a holdout until St. Louis forks over the cash that he and agent Tom Condon are looking for.
Remember, the Lions got a deal done with quarterback Matthew Stafford before selecting him first overall in 2009, just like the Dolphins did with offensive tackle Jake Long in 2008.
However, just because the Rams wouldn’t make a final decision until after the workout doesn’t mean they couldn’t have open lines of communication with Condon in an attempt to lockdown the broad strokes of a contract, making it easier to close a deal in three days time.
In addition to the Rams, Bradford is also scheduled to work out for the Washington Redskins on April 15.
