Report: Heisman winner RGIII is headed for the pros

USC quarterback Matt Barkley may have opted to return to school for one more shot at a national championship, but the same can’t be said for Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

Robert GriffinICONGriffin threw for 4,293 yards and 37 touchdowns in 13 games this past season.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that the electrifying Baylor quarterback will forego his final year of eligibility and head for the professional ranks.

The deadline to declare for the 2012 NFL draft is January 15.

The 21-year-old Griffin ranked second in the nation in QB rating (189.5) and first in yards per attempt average (10.68) while leading the Baylor Bears to a 10-3 record and a thrilling 67-56 win over the Washington Huskies in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

With Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck all but certain to go first overall in this April’s draft, the attention now turns to where Griffin will wind up playing his football on Sundays. The Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns are two teams who could be in the market, but whether or not Griffin will be available when either organization goes on the clock remains to be seen.

After rushing for 699 yards and ten touchdowns in 13 games this past season, you can bet Griffin will be one of the most discussed and sought-after prospects in this year’s draft class.
