So long, New York: Steve Smith signs with the Eagles
You snooze, you lose.
Steve Smith is headed to Philly on a one-year deal.
While the New York Giants were considering whether or not to re-sign wide receiver Steve Smith, the Philadelphia Eagles swooped in and inked the veteran wideout to a one-year contract, the team announced Wednesday evening.
The 26-year-old Smith spent the last two days in New York meeting with Giants officials about the possibility of returning to the team, but left town without a contract, per Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger.
Smith is just two years removed from a 107-catch season that earned him a trip to the Pro Bowl, but an injury-riddled 2010 campaign limited the former USC Trojan to just 48 receptions spread out over nine games.
It’s unlikely we’ll see Smith on the gridiron with the Eagles anytime in the immediate future, as the wideout underwent microfracture surgery on his knee last December and is still working himself back into shape.
Regardless, it’s a low-risk move for an Eagles team that still appears to be unsure about the status of wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.
