Steve Smith likely out vs. Chicago

As if being 0-4 wasn’t bad enough, the old adage “when it rains, it pours,” certainly seems applicable to the Carolina Panthers this week.

Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith suffered a high ankle sprain during the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to the New Orleans Saints and will likely miss this week’s game against the Chicago Bears, per Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer.

Smith has been underperforming for owners so far this season, ranking just 35th in points among fantasy wideouts (standard scoring). However, most of that can be attributed to the fact that Carolina is without a legitimate No. 2 wide receiver and has a rookie (Jimmy Clausen) starting at quarterback.

No timetable has been set for Smith’s return, but owners should start making other preparations for Week 5. It looks like rookie Brandon LaFell (LSU) could be the No. 1 entering this Sunday’s matchup with Chicago.
