Talib returning to New England on one-year deal

With the exception of the cash-slinging Indianapolis Colts, NFL teams have been very hesitant about taking a crowbar to their wallets during the 2013 offseason. Look no further than the deals handed out to free agent pass rushers and cornerbacks for proof.

So rather than fight tooth and nail for every last penny in what would likely be a disappointing long term contract offer, free agent cornerback Aqib Talib has opted to make a little bank this season and then head back out into the open waters in 2014.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Talib has come to terms on a one-year deal worth $5 million to remain with the New England Patriots.

It’s a good move for the 27-year-old Kansas product, who can now spend the next year proving to teams that he’s not only a capable starting cornerback, but that he’s also matured and put his past off-the-field indiscretions behind him.

Talib spent the first four+ seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (first round, 2008 draft) before being traded to New England midway through the 2012 regular season. Worth noting is the fact that opposing cornerbacks posted a passer rating of 103.7 when throwing in Talib’s direction last season.

Bring that number down in 2013 and take it to the bank next offseason.
