Was Porter plan B for the Cardinals?

The Arizona Cardinals signed free agent linebacker Joey Porter on Friday after losing several valuable members of their organization this offseason.

But while Porter brings experience and an impressive resume to the desert, it looks as if he may not have been the Cardinals’ first choice.

According to Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plan Dealer, Arizona was one of multiple teams interested in trading for former Browns linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, who was recently shipped to the Oakland Raiders.

Wimbley—who played outside linebacker in Cleveland’s 3-4 defense—would have been a nice fit for a Cardinals unit that also employs the 3-4.

However, per Grossi, the problem with acquiring Wimbley was his contract. The linebacker has voided the final year of his deal due to performance incentives, making 2010 the last year of his contract.

And with the way the Oakland Raiders have been known to spend money, Wimbley could be in line for a big payday in the future.
