Demaryius Thomas missing practice due to death in family

Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas will not open training camp with his teammates due to a death in his family, according to an ESPN report.

Thomas' grandmother passed away with her funeral services taking place this week. After attending a team meeting on Wednesday, Thomas traveled back home to Georgia to be with his family. He has been excused from the start of training camp by the Broncos organization.

Thomas has emerged as one of the NFL's premier receivers in the NFL with Peyton Manning quarterbacking the Broncos over the past two seasons. He followed his stellar 2012 season — 1,434 yards and 10 touchdowns — with 1,430 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2013.

He will return to the Broncos' facility on Monday.

This is a classy move by the Broncos to allow Thomas the appropriate time to grieve. Some things are much more important than the game of football when it's all said and done.

Follow me on Twitter: @JasonHButt
