Ravens sign safety Will Hill

The Ravens have taken a flyer on former Giants safety Will Hill, signing him to the 90-man roster on Friday, the organization announced.

Hill rounds out the roster after cornerback Aaron Ross was moved to injured reserve. Ross tore his Achilles while running the team's conditioning test prior to training camp opening.

Hill has had some run-ins with NFL rules, having violated the substance-abuse policy twice and the performance-enhancing drugs policy once. An immensely talented safety, the Giants decided to cut ties as a result. His most recent violation of the substance-abuse policy has resulted in a six-game suspension for the 2014 season.

It's a low-risk move for the Ravens, in that his value is cheap and his on-field talent is evident. He had 77 tackles and two interceptions in 12 games (10 starts) in 2013. Hill should be able to add depth to a safety group of Matt Elam, Darian Stewart, Jeromy Miles and Terrence Brooks once he's eligible to play.

"If we need it, Will will provide depth in the middle of the season,” Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said in a statement.

Follow me on Twitter: @JasonHButt
