Are the Bears going to be a player in FA?

INDIANAPOLIS--Lovie Smith took to the podium this morning at the Combine and it wasn’t surprising to hear him answer questions about wide receivers, the relationship between new offensive coordinator Mike Martz and QB Jay Cutler and if 2010 is a win or else year for his coaching life in Chicago.

However, it is obvious that the Bears are looking to upgrade their defensive personnel.

The Bears head coach talked about “improving the safety position” and wasn’t shy to say that the club "always looks to bring in new veteran players" when asked about the defensive end position.

Carolina DE Julius Peppers has been linked to the Bears as their No.1 target in free agency, Antrel Rolle could be a player when the Bears look to add to the free safety position, and the word around the media room this morning is that the Bears will not be shy when it comes to opening their wallets come March.

But, how much cash?

Peppers will be a risk due to the amount of guaranteed money he is going to want up front (in the $35-40 million dollar range), and we all know that the risk of handing out that type of coin to a player who is known to take a series off from time to time.

The daily rumor here in Indy when it comes to the Bears? Going after both Rolle and Aaron Kampman of the Packers.

I am a firm believer that Rolle would be an upgrade over any safety on the Bears roster. Plus, he would allow the Bears to be more creative in the secondary as Rolle does have the ability to play man coverage over the top of a No.3 WR.

With Kampman, the Bears get an every down DE who can hold the edge vs. the outside run game and rush the passer.

Lovie was quick to say—when talking about free agency—that he believes the “core is solid” when it comes to his football team, but anyone can look at this roster and see the glaring holes on the defensive side of the football.

To play Tampa 2, you need DEs who can get to the quarterback and you need safeties that can drive downhill and make plays on the football. We can talk about Martz and Cutler all off-season, but this football team wins games when they produce turnovers on defense.

And they will need to add to the roster to ensure this happens once again in Chicago.
