Are the Dolphins thinking WR in the draft?

The Miami Dolphins have been linked to multiple wide receivers throughout free agency, from Antonio Bryant (before he signed with Cincy) to Brandon Marshall and even Terrell Owens.

However, according to a report from Jason La Canfora of, head coach Tony Sparano isn’t interested in the two top FA wide receivers left — Marshall and Owens — saying at the owners meetings in Orlando, “I don’t know if they make sense for our ball club, one way or the other. I’m happy with the group of players I have right now.”

The “group of players” Sparano has right now is a nice collection of wideouts, but they aren’t the type of players that can command complete attention of opposing defensive coordinators and secondaries.
I am a big fan of quarterback Chad Henne due to the fact that he has all of the tools to become a franchise QB in this league — but he still needs to develop. And, adding a top- tier wideout through the draft makes sense.

If Miami wants to become more of a vertical offense outside of the downhill running attack of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, they have to bring in a wideout that can have an immediate impact.

Is that a Dez Bryant from Okie State? I have written about Bryant before — and the red flags that come with him. Would a Sparano/Bill Parcels combo take care of those concerns? Bryant wouldn’t find a more demanding situation that requires accountability and professionalism.

There is still always the chance that the Dolphins don’t go with a WR at No. 12 later next month; instead, looking at a couple of players who could fall into the second round. Rookie prospects</a> such as Arrelious Benn of Illinois — who has the size/speed combo to play in the AFC East — or Brandon LaFell of LSU fit the bill.

But, the wide receiver position is an area of need that the Dolphins do need to address in the draft if they don’t make a play for a guy like Marshall. Henne needs another weapon and this offense in general needs a playmaker who can stretch the field, produce on third downs and score in the red zone.
