NFL Combine: CB Janoris Jenkins under the spotlight

Talking to NFL scouts after Senior Bowl practices last month there was a general “buzz” surrounding CB Janoris Jenkins. That’s going to happen when you show up in Mobile and are ready to compete.

Janoris Jenkins ICONJenkins has first round talent and could rise up draft boards with a strong showing at the NFL Combine.

You could see it on the field during one-on-ones. The North Alabama product displayed good footwork, used his hands in a press-man alignment and drove downhill (with solid angles) when asked to play in an off-man look.

Exactly what you want when grading out the CB position leading up to the NFL Draft.

But the NFL Combine in Indianapolis will carry even more weight for Jenkins—staring with the interview process. The CB will have to answer some questions about his off the field issues while playing at Florida before he ended up at North Alabama.

And Jenkins will have to hear those same questions for every NFL scout, coach and GM he meets with down in Indy. They will want answers and this is part of the Combine experience for any player that has some “red flags’ attached to his scouting report.

On the field, we know speed and drill work plays a role in Indy at the CB position. There’s no denying that. Scouts will want a 40 time on Jenkins and the short shuttle (20-yard shuttle) will also impact his grade as a prospect.

A real opportunity for Jenkins to solidify a first-round grade, move up draft boards and possibly challenge Alabama’s Dre Kirkpatrick as the second CB taken off the board after LSU’s Morris Claiborne.

I’ve talked about the stress that follows these prospects the minute they step off the plan in Indy, and for Jenkins, it will be immense. Between the interviews and the testing on the field, the entire NFL will want answers. Part of the process when trying to get in the NFL.
