I want to go back to the Eagles-Redskins game back at Red Ex Field on Sunday. Rex Grossman throws four interceptions in the 20-13 loss and that generates some QB talk in Washington. However, don’t forget about Kurt Coleman. The Eagles’ safety intercepts three passes in the win. Today, lets look at all three on video, talk route schemes, coverage and break them down with some coaching points.

Interception No.1

- Redskins personnel: Posse (3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB)
- Eagles defense: 2-man
- Route scheme: 4 verticals (out of an empty alignment)

2-Man looks like Cover 2 (or Tampa 2) at the safety position. Drop to a landmark (top of the numbers) and play over the top of any vertical concepts. Underneath, the Eagles are playing with a “trial-man” technique (inside leverage on bottom hip of WR). As a deep half safety in 2-Man, the middle of the field is a target. Here, Coleman overlaps the deep inside vertial seam and plays the ball at the highest point.

Interception No.2

- Redskins personnel: Posse (3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB)
- Eagles defense: Cover 4 (quarters)
- Route scheme: Hi-Lo (motion to empty)

Cover 4 (quarters) is a good call inside of the 20-yard line as it allows the two safeties to drive on inside breaking routes. The CBs will carry the verticals by No.1 with the SS and FS aligned to play the Hi-Lo concept. With Santana Moss running the underneath crosser, Redskins’ TE Fred Davis will stem his route vertically up the field and break on the shallow dig. Could be some mis-communication here between the TE and Grossman, but Coleman is still in a position (playing inside the TE) to drive on the football and make a play on the ball. And as safety playing Cover 4, you can't wait to see the Hi-Lo concept.

Interception No.3

-Redskins personnel: Posse (3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB)
-Eagles defense: Cover 6 (quarter, quarter, half)
- Route scheme: “Sucker”

Cover 6 (Cover 4 to the passing strength, Cover 2 to the weak side). Working vs. a bunch look from the 'Skins, the Eagles counter with a "Box" call (4 on 3) to take away the "Sucker" concept (option, dig, 9). With Coleman playing the top, inside corner of the "Box," he has to carry the 9 (fade) with the CB driving to Moss on the dig. The INT? A poor decision by Grossman to force the ball down the field vs. a safety that has been making plays all afternoon. Coleman drives back downhill and breaks right in front of the WR for his thrid pick of the game.

A career day for Coleman? I would say so. And the type of production from the Eagles' safety that could put Grossman on the bench in Washington.
