Time for Oakland to give Bulger a look?
Who is going to make a play for quarterback Marc Bulger?
The veteran was released from St. Louis yesterday, and in customary fashion, we started to line up the quarterback-hungry franchises such as Buffalo, Oakland, Jacksonville, San Fran, etc. and speculate on where he would land.
A reunion with Mike Martz in Chicago? I can’t see it because Bulger isn’t looking for a backup gig — which is exactly what he will have in Chicago behind Jay Cutler. A possible fallback plan as Lovie Smith’s Bears need a veteran backup, but Bulger is looking for a place to compete.
So, why not Oakland?
If the Tom Cable/Al Davis camp is serious about a QB competition between JaMarcus Russell and Bruce Gradkowski, does it hurt to add another veteran — one who has had success in this league?
We all know the Raiders need to get better at the QB position. Creating more competition is a direct way to get the best out of professional players and to see who can handle the stress of a camp battle in August. I am a big fan of allowing Gradkowski to go after Russell’s starting job. The former first-round pick hasn’t done anything in my opinion to warrant another free pass with the first unit once the Raiders put on the pads this summer.
It is almost a necessity in Oakland. Someone has to challenge Russell — because we need to see how he responds in what could be his last-ditch effort to start in the NFL.
And, adding Bulger makes it even more interesting. By doing so, the Raiders would open up the battle for this job even more. Bulger has played on some horrendous football teams in St. Louis over the last couple of seasons, but that doesn’t mean he can’t offer something to Oakland.
Bulger should draw some interest from multiple teams. I don’t expect him to get anything that he doesn’t have to compete for, but looking at it from the Raiders perspective, they need a veteran who has produced to come in and challenge Russell along with Gradkowski.
It is time to raise the stakes even more at the quarterback position in Oakland.
