Now that Mike Shanahan has his quarterback in Donovan McNabb, the speculation of where Jason Campbell will end up has begun.

Campbell, like so many other veterans who see a high-profile player come in at their position, will be on the phone with his agent today trying to find a new home. And, I like to think that Campbell will have some takers as we continue to work toward the draft.

According to ESPN 980 in Washington, there is interest in Campbell from Buffalo, Carolina, Oakland, Jacksonville and an unknown team. And, looking at what Campbell can provide as a young QB who can be an impact player when put in the proper offense with good weapons around him, each of these four teams listed makes sense.

Buffalo has been in the QB market since new head coach Chan Gailey arrived; Carolina has a young — but unproven — Matt Moore, who is on a one-year deal; Oakland has a mess on its hands with JaMarcus Russell; and Jacksonville could be looking for some competition for David Garrard.

All possible destinations for Campbell. But, at what price?

I asked around this morning about what value Campbell would have in the trade market and the response I got from multiple sources was in the fourth-round range. In reality, both sides win if a deal for Campbell goes down. The ‘Skins get something in return for a player that would be an unrestricted free agent in 2011 — and a player who would serve as a backup to McNabb — and the new club gets a guy who can compete for a starting job at an average price of a fourth-round pick.

It is now obvious that Campbell was never the first choice of Shanahan when he took the job, but that doesn’t mean that Washington will just dump him. There is value with Campbell and it gives the ‘Skins another draft pick to play with.

And Campbell gets to prove himself outside of Washington.
