10 ways the top ten could play out

It’s always anyone’s guess how the top ten of an NFL draft will shake out. With players rising and falling due to character/medical concerns, trades taking place across the board and teams reaching on quarterbacks, there literally are thousands of ways this could play out.

Therefore, the NFP takes a look at ten of those scenarios and highlights the keys from each circumstance.

With Auburn QB Cam Newton going number one overall…

NewtonICONNewton is the favorite to be the number one overall pick.

Take 1…

1. Carolina Panthers: Auburn QB Cam Newton
2. Denver Broncos: Alabama DL Marcell Dareus
3. Buffalo Bills: Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Georgia WR A.J. Green
5. Arizona Cardinals: Texas A&M OLB Von Miller
6. Cleveland Browns: Alabama WR Julio Jones
7. San Francisco 49ers: LSU CB Patrick Peterson
8. Tennessee Titans: Auburn DT Nick Fairley
9. Dallas Cowboys: USC OT Tyron Smith
10. Washington Redskins: North Carolina DE Robert Quinn

Two quarterbacks going in the top five means the 49ers get a real break with CB Patrick Peterson falling to them at seven, potentially landing the top talent in the 2011 NFL draft.

Take 2…

1. Carolina Panthers: Auburn QB Cam Newton
2. Denver Broncos: Alabama DL Marcell Dareus
3. Buffalo Bills: Texas A&M OLB Von Miller
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert
5. Arizona Cardinals: USC OT Tyron Smith
6. Cleveland Browns: Georgia WR A.J. Green
7. San Francisco 49ers: LSU CB Patrick Peterson
8. Tennessee Titans: Auburn DT Nick Fairley
9. Dallas Cowboys: North Carolina DE Robert Quinn
10. Washington Redskins: Alabama WR Julio Jones

With OLB Von Miller off the board as well as the top two quarterbacks, the Cardinals are forced into a tough spot and elect to upgrade at OT with Tyron Smith.

Take 3…

1. Carolina Panthers: Auburn QB Cam Newton
2. Denver Broncos: LSU CB Patrick Peterson
3. Buffalo Bills: Alabama DL Marcell Dareus
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Auburn DT Nick Fairley
5. Arizona Cardinals: Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert
6. Cleveland Browns: Alabama WR Julio Jones
7. San Francisco 49ers: Texas A&M OLB Von Miller
8. Tennessee Titans: Georgia WR A.J. Green
9. Dallas Cowboys: USC OT Tyron Smith
10. Washington Redskins: California DE Cameron Jordan

The Broncos are the key in this mock, opting to take CB Patrick Peterson over DL Marcell Dareus at two. And with two QB’s going in the top five, it again allows the 49ers to get a real gem in Von Miller to fill a void at OLB.

PetersonPeterson could go as high as number two.

Take 4…

1. Carolina Panthers: Auburn QB Cam Newton
2. Denver Broncos: LSU CB Patrick Peterson
3. Buffalo Bills: Texas A&M OLB Von Miller
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Alabama DL Marcell Dareus
5. Arizona Cardinals: Georgia WR A.J. Green
6. Cleveland Browns: Auburn DT Nick Fairley
7. San Francisco 49ers: North Carolina DE Robert Quinn
8. Tennessee Titans: Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert
9. Dallas Cowboys: USC OT Tyron Smith
10. Washington Redskins: Alabama WR Julio Jones

The shocker in this one is the Cardinals opting for the draft’s best wide in A.J. Green to pair with Larry Fitzgerald on the outside. Scary.

Take 5…

1. Carolina Panthers: Auburn QB Cam Newton
2. Denver Broncos: Texas A&M OLB Von Miller
3. Buffalo Bills: LSU CB Patrick Peterson
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Georgia WR A.J. Green
5. Arizona Cardinals: USC OT Tyron Smith
6. Cleveland Browns: Alabama DL Marcell Dareus
7. San Francisco 49ers: Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert
8. Tennessee Titans: North Carolina DE Robert Quinn
9. Dallas Cowboys: Auburn DT Nick Fairley
10. Washington Redskins: Alabama WR Julio Jones

OLB Von Miller and CB Patrick Peterson come off the board 2 and 3 respectively, leading to a slight fall for DT Marcell Dareus to six. The 49ers are now forced to make the decision between a QB with Blaine Gabbert and OLB with Robert Quinn.

With Alabama DL Marcell Dareus going number one overall…

Take 6…

1. Carolina Panthers: Alabama DL Marcell Dareus
2. Denver Broncos: LSU CB Patrick Peterson
3. Buffalo Bills: Auburn QB Cam Newton
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Georgia WR A.J. Green
5. Arizona Cardinals: Texas A&M OLB Von Miller
6. Cleveland Browns: Auburn DT Nick Fairley
7. San Francisco 49ers: Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert
8. Tennessee Titans: North Carolina DE Robert Quinn
9. Dallas Cowboys: USC OT Tyron Smith
10. Washington Redskins: Alabama WR Julio Jones

DL Marcell Dareus is the changeup here going first overall. Therefore, expect the Broncos to look at CB Patrick Peterson and the Bills get the QB they want in Cam Newton.

Take 7…

1. Carolina Panthers: Alabama DL Marcell Dareus
2. Denver Broncos: LSU CB Patrick Peterson
3. Buffalo Bills: Auburn QB Cam Newton
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert
5. Arizona Cardinals: Texas A&M OLB Von Miller
6. Cleveland Browns: Georgia WR A.J. Green
7. San Francisco 49ers: North Carolina DE Robert Quinn
8. Tennessee Titans: Auburn DT Nick Fairley
9. Dallas Cowboys: USC OT Tyron Smith
10. Washington Redskins: TRADE via St. Louis Rams: Alabama WR Julio Jones

The Bengals opt to go QB here with Blaine Gabbert still on the board. Therefore, the Browns get their pick of the top two wideouts and it allows Julio Jones to fall to the Redskins, who can deal out if they so choose.

DareusICONIs Dareus worth the number one overall pick?

Take 8…

1. Carolina Panthers: Alabama DL Marcell Dareus
2. Denver Broncos: Auburn QB Cam Newton
3. Buffalo Bills: Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Auburn DT Nick Fairley
5. Arizona Cardinals: Texas A&M OLB Von Miller
6. Cleveland Browns: Georgia WR A.J. Green
7. San Francisco 49ers: LSU CB Patrick Peterson
8. Tennessee Titans: North Carolina DE Robert Quinn
9. Dallas Cowboys: Nebraska CB Prince Amukamara
10. Washington Redskins: USC OT Tyron Smith

The Broncos pull a fast one and take QB Cam Newton at two, something I don’t think is completely out of the question for them.

Take 9…

1. Carolina Panthers: Alabama DL Marcell Dareus
2. Denver Broncos: Texas A&M OLB Von Miller
3. Buffalo Bills: Auburn QB Cam Newton
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Georgia WR A.J. Green
5. Arizona Cardinals: Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert
6. Cleveland Browns: LSU CB Patrick Peterson
7. San Francisco 49ers: Nebraska CB Prince Amukamara
8. Tennessee Titans: North Carolina DE Robert Quinn
9. Dallas Cowboys: Auburn DT Nick Fairley
10. Washington Redskins: USC OT Tyron Smith

The 49ers see CB Patrick Peterson come off the board on e pick before them, forcing them to reach on a CB in Prince Amukamara at seven.

With Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert going number one overall…

Take 10…

1. Carolina Panthers: Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert
2. Denver Broncos: LSU CB Patrick Peterson
3. Buffalo Bills: Auburn QB Cam Newton
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Georgia WR A.J. Green
5. Arizona Cardinals: Alabama DL Marcell Dareus
6. Cleveland Browns: Alabama WR Julio Jones
7. San Francisco 49ers: Texas A&M OLB Von Miller
8. Tennessee Titans: North Carolina DE Robert Quinn
9. Dallas Cowboys: Missouri OLB Aldon Smith
10. Washington Redskins: Auburn DT Nick Fairley

The shocker here is finding a way for USC OT Tyron Smith to fall outside the top ten, with Dallas opting for OLB Aldon Smith and the Redskins taking a shot on DT Nick Fairley.
