49ers lock up Ray McDonald
Some have speculated the San Francisco 49ers have been shaving salary cap room in order to make a big push for cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who is also being pursued by the New York Jets.
But the Niners stepped up today and spent good money on one of their own, reaching an agreement with defensive end Ray McDonald on a five-year contract. McDonald, who has missed only one game the last three seasons, received a $20 million contract with $7 million guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
It’s a good idea to keep a close watch on cornerback Nate Clements. There was a frenzy of reports that the Niners had informed Clements he would be released, fueling speculation Asomugha was coming. But those reports have since been retracted. Clements still could be on the way out, but nothing has happened yet.
