49ers make it official, release David Akers

The San Francisco 49ers made it official with David Akers today, releasing the 14-year veteran kicker in a move that has been expected.

Akers, who was going to earn $3 million this coming year, struggled this past season and was nearly replaced on the postseason roster by Billy Cundiff, but stuck it out. Now, he’ll have to seek a new employer in 2013.

“The 49ers would like to thank David for his service, dedication and leadership over the past two years,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement released by the club. “He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him, and his family, all the best.”

Akers missed 13 of 42 field goals he attempted this past season and struggled in recovery from offseason surgery for a sports hernia. He was dynamic for the 49ers in 2011, his first season with the franchise, setting an NFL record with 44 field goals and scoring a league-high 166 points.

A six-time Pro Bowl performer, Akers should be able to find work if he can regain his health and accuracy. He’s always had a strong leg on kickoffs.
