49ers place Colin Kaepernick on injured reserve, undergoing surgery for labrum

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was placed on injured reserve, shutting down his season. Kaepernick is going to undergo surgery on his left shoulder for a torn labrum. This could spell the end of his up-and-down tenure with the 49ers. Blaine Gabbert will start in his place, as he has ever since Kaepernick was benched against the Atlanta Falcons. The last-place 49ers promoted Dylan Thompson from the practice squad. Kaepernick has completed 59 percent of his throws for 1,615 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions this season. Once a Super Bowl quarterback, Kaepernick is likely done now with the 49ers. Follow me on Twitter: @AaronWilson_NFL Aaron Wilson covers the Texans for The Houston Chronicle.
