The San Francisco 49ers promoted cornerback Leon McFadden from the practice squad to the active roster.

The 49ers haven't gotten back outside linebacker Aldon Smith from a suspension early, as they'd hoped for.

McFadden is a former Cleveland Browns third-round draft pick.

He has a previous stint with the New York Jets.
