49ers ship Shaun Hill to Motown

More impressive than luring David Carr to be their backup quarterback may be the fact that the San Francisco 49ers found a taker for Shaun Hill.

With most expecting the journeyman quarterback to be released, the Niners were able to ship him off to Detroit, according to multiple reports. The 49ers will get a seventh-round pick from the Lions in 2011. Hey, we didn’t say they got much in return for him.

The Lions presumably like him as a backup option to Matthew Stafford and it’s a good situation for Hill because he’s headed to a team that liked him enough to trade for him.

San Francisco had given Hill permission to seek a trade last week after Carr agreed to sign on board with a $6.25 million, two-year contract. Hill was 10-6 as a starter for the 49ers in three seasons. Hill worked previously with Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan in Minnesota.
