49ers spinning the QB carousel one final time

The San Francisco 49ers are turning the quarterback carousel one more time with the hope that it can produce a little late-season magic and propel them to a postseason run.

The team will make the switch to Troy Smith, according to David White of the San Francisco Chronicle, for Sunday’s game at St. Louis, a must-win for the 49ers.

Coach Mike Singletary hasn’t made the announcement official, but apparently former No. 1 pick Alex Smith is getting pulled. The decision came after the Niners were lifeless in a 34-7 loss to the San Diego Chargers last week. It’s the third quarterback switcheroo this season, per the report, and it could seal the fate of Alex Smith in San Francisco. He will be a free agent after the season and there is a growing likelihood Singletary will also be a free agent.

Troy Smith passed for 356 yards in a wild overtime victory over the Rams last month. The 49ers will also have to beat the Arizona Cardinals next week to sneak in as the NFC West champions, if anyone can be crowned a champion with a losing record.
