49ers tender restricted free agent CB Tramaine Brock

Ahead of the Tuesday deadline the San Francisco 49ers have tendered a one-year offer to cornerback Tramaine Brock, a restricted free agent.

Brock was tendered at the lowest level, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, meaning he will receive $1.323 million and San Francisco will have the right to match any offer sheet. But there will be no draft pick compensation for Brock because he was undrafted in 2010, and Barrows speculates there could be interest in him because of that.

Brock played some in 2011 and had a pair of interceptions in the first two games before suffering a hand injury. He was the team’s fifth cornerback this past season and was valuable on special teams. Still, it is important to note that offer sheets for restricted free agents are rare.

The primary reason teams shy away from doing these is because it often only helps the other team out by putting a deal in place that can be matched. Clubs feel like they are doing the dirty work for an opponent by constructing a contract that can be matched, especially for a player like Brock who has some upside but won’t be signed away to a huge deal.

Barrows also reports that safety Darcel McBath, also a restricted free agent, has not received a tender. He could potentially replace Dashon Goldson if the All-Pro starter leaves via free agent. The 49ers have until Tuesday to tender McBath.
