49ers tried to land Randy Moss a year ago

The San Francisco 49ers made a play for Randy Moss last year.

At that point, general manager Trent Baalke told SiriusXM NFL Radio, the team was told Moss was done.

“The response was, 'Not interested. Done. Hanging the cleats up,’” Baalke said, per Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News. “So we just let it go. Obviously Randy didn't come back (in 2011) and sat out the year.”

The 49ers landed Moss for this season on a one-year contract, and Monday he showed up for his first day of involvement in the club’s voluntary offseason workout program. The 49ers, like nearly all other teams, are in Week 3 of their program and it was planned for Moss to skip the first two weeks.

“It was eye opening," Moss told the team’s Web site. “Today was the first day, and we were moving so fast. Today felt like we'd been out here for a week or two.”

Moss was reportedly in shape and now he’s rolling with the Niners. We’ll see if this pairing can help both parties. It will be interesting because if Moss can add what has been a missing vertical element to the passing game, he could provide a real boost.
