A.J. Feeley remains the starter in St. Louis, for now
Lovie Smith used to have a saying with the Chicago Bears.
“Rex is our quarterback.”
Things with Grossman eventually got a little batty and then he changed his tune.
“Brian Griese is our quarterback.”
That tune didn’t become a hit so quickly it was “Kyle is our quarterback.”
T-shirts were made and now any that remain are in garbage bins or at the bottom of a drawer because Jay Cutler is in town. It’s a long, drawn out way to introduce Jim Thomas’ story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that A.J. Feeley is Steve Spagbuolo’s quarterback.
“Just like I stated all spring, if we played today — I'm sticking with it — if we played today, A.J. would be the guy,” Spagnuolo said. “Maybe I should put that on tape.”
Great. But after guaranteeing Sam Bradford $50 million as the No. 1 pick in the draft, we can guarantee that Bradford will be Spagnuolo’s quarterback at some point this season. But the coach can’t just hand the job over to Bradford, even in the midst of a rebuilding project moving at full throttle. So Feeley will temporarily hold the job and the title, and Spagnuolo can go to his tape, if necessary.
“My mind-set going into this thing is to get this team ready to play,” Feeley said. “And offensively, it's to go in there and be the guy and run with it. But in the meeting room and outside of that, I'm there to help those guys out as much as possible.”
Inevitably, like within a matter of weeks or maybe months, Bradford will be the quarterback. You can probably already order your T-shirt that declares him the man. The Rams better hope Spagnuolo doesn’t have to change his slogan like Smith did though.
