Aldon Smith pleaded no contest to DUI, weapons charges

San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith pleaded no contest to three felony counts of illegal possession of assault weapons as well as two misdemeanor driving under the influence cases.

Smith is expected to be sentenced on July 25 after the start of training camp.

Smith could go to jail for up to four years and four months, or receive probation.

“Aldon has never wavered from his commitment to do the right thing in this case,” Joshua Bentley, Smith’s attorney, said in a statement. “Today’s court appearance was an essential and critical step in moving the case forward.

“Aldon has accepted and continues to accept responsibility for his actions. We are looking forward to the next court appearance and are confident that the Court will reach an appropriate sentence.”

Added 49ers general manager Trent Baalke: "We are aware that Aldon entered a plea today in a case that we have closely monitored. Today was an important step towards bringing that situation to a resolution.”

Smith is also facing a potential misdemeanor charge in Los Angeles for making a false report of a bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport. It's unclear whether he'll be formally charged yet.

Smith held a house party in 2012 where he fired his gun and he was stabbed with a subsequent search finding illegal assault rifles.

He was arrested last year and charged with DUI when he hit a tree.

Smith missed five games last season to go into a treatment facility.

Talented but troubled, he has 42 career sacks in 43 games.
