Alex Smith comfortable with everything in San Francisco

Alex Smith said it was a little “unexpected” when the San Francisco 49ers got into the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, but other than that the quarterback seems just fine.

Smith even had a little fun when he said he would have “relished” the opportunity to compete with Manning for a starting job.

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Smith says his relationship with coach Jim Harbaugh is as strong as it’s been.

“The thing from Day One when I first met coach Harbaugh is that he's always been upfront, he's always been honest with me,” Smith said. “And he continued to do that through this entire process, and that's one of the reasons I love playing for him.”

As suspected, the deal got sweetened a little for Smith. The club had an offer on the table for him before it began chasing Manning. That deal included about $10 million in guarantees, per Barrows. The three-year deal he signed has $16.5 million in guarantees with a base value of $24 million. It can max out at $33 million.

"I've been through way worse than this," Smith said. "Free agency is always going to be a little crazy – maybe this year a little crazier than most."

Yes, when you consider what Smith went through before Harbaugh arrived, he’s been through much worse.
