Alex Smith on verge of joining Dolphins

The trickle-down of the Peyton Manning sweepstakes continues to have an effect around the league.

Alex Smith, who looked to be all but returning to the San Francisco 49ers, is now on the verge of joining the Miami Dolphins, reports Mike Klis of the Denver Post.

The Dolphins, already spurned by Manning and then by Matt Flynn, who agreed to a deal with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, are prepared to offer Smith around $8 million per year to come to South Beach.

If Smith does indeed wind up in Miami, it makes the Manning sweepstakes all that much higher for the 49ers, who suddenly will have to scramble for a starter if they don't land Manning and don't feel Colin Kaepernick is ready.
