Andy Reid: 'It's my obligation to make the proper decision'

Andy Reid said he did not come to his decision to name Michael Vick the starting quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles easily.

It took time. But after Vick led the offense to 52 points in the last six quarters, nearly rallying th team against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1, it was a no brainer. The decision has nothing to do with the concussion starter Kevin Kolb suffered in the first half of the opener. Kolb has been cleared to return to football, but Vick is now the starter.

“I took plenty of time to evaluate it and this is what I think is right," Reid said, according to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News. “It's my obligation to make the proper decision.”

Reid called Vick “exceptional” though a game and a half. He was electric in the team’s 35-32 victory at Detroit on Sunday, and there is pressure on to win this season. The Eagles are currently among three teams at 1-1 in the division.

Reid, in a teleconference with reporters, said Kolb is the first person he informed of his decision.

“Kevin Kolb wants to be the starting quarterback,” said Reid, who called him a team player.

Reid said he believes Vick can carry the team to the Super Bowl. It’s interesting because he’s so strongly backed Kolb since the trade of Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins, who the Eagles will face in two weeks.

“One of the great things about America is you're given a second chance if you handle it the proper way," Reid said. "His teammates will stand up for Michael and so will I."
