Arizona opens minicamp with Lutui MIA
The Arizona Cardinals have kicked off their minicamp and Deuce Lutui is nowhere to be found.
The veteran guard who is a restricted free agent and has been tendered at the second-round level has not signed a contract and also has not been in contact with the club.
So, Lutui has quickly been replaced. Veteran Alan Faneca has been inserted at left guard as the starter and Reggie Wells has moved from that start to right guard, where Lutui started last year. If Lutui stays away much longer, the Cardinals could simply move on without him.
"You guys have been around me enough to know that I don't like to talk about players who aren't here," Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt told reporters. "We've got a good football team out here. One of the most important things is spending time together because that's when you learn to rely on each other, and that's where you bond as a team."
Lutui’s agent Max Hannemann said earlier in the offseason that his client desired a longterm extension. Who wouldn’t like one of those? The reality is the team holds the leverage. Lutui’s only leverage is to stay away. Unfortunately, that can also hurt him and at this point he might just be headed down that path.
