At long last, Saints will add Patrick Ramsey to mix
The suspense was removed long ago, but the New Orleans Saints are expected to sign Patrick Ramsey later this week as a potential veteran backup to Drew Brees.
Restrictions on free-agent signings for the champion Saints will be lifted on Thursday, reports Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network. That will allow the Saints to complete a move that has been in the works for quite some time with the New Orleans Times-Picayune reporting in the spring that the former Tulane standout was likely to join the team.
Ramsey essentially takes the place of Mark Brunell, who is expected to sign with the New York Jets. He gives the Saints an experienced player behind Brees but Ramsey will still have to perform to with the No. 2 job. Chase Daniel, who the Saints picked up in September last season, and Sean Canfield, the seventh-round draft pick from Oregon State. Daniel spent last season rotating between the practice squad and 53-man roster with the Saints. He’ll have to perform well in preseason to prove he’s ready to be the No. 2.
