Bears add Keith Bulluck's nephew
BOURBONNAIS, Ill.—The Chicago Bears have signed journeyman linebacker Kelvin Smith to a one-year contract.
Smith participated in the team’s minicamp in May on a tryout basis and he comes in to take the roster spot of wide receiver Antonio Robinson, who was waived/injured with a shin issue. Robinson was an undrafted free agent from Nicholls State and he will revert back to the club’s injured reserve after he clears waivers. He’s expected to be sidelined four to six weeks with a stress fracture and could receive an injury settlement.
Smith played in three games last season for the Carolina Panthers. A seventh-round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2007 from Syracuse, he’s an undersized performer who fits the mold the Bears seek. He’s also spent time with the New York Giants.
Smith is the nephew of New York Giants middle linebacker Keith Bulluck. His godfather is former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Seth Joyner.
