Bears add Mike Groh to complete Marc Trestman's staff

Five weeks after he was hired, Marc Trestman went to the college ranks to complete his coaching staff.

Specifically, he went to the staff of Nick Saban’s national championship team at Alabama to get the job done. The Bears hired Mike Groh, son of former New York Jets coach and longtime NFL assistant Al Groh, to become their wide receivers coach.

Mike Groh was the wide receivers coach/recruiting coordinator for the Crimson Tide and was in his second stint at the school. A former quarterback at Virginia, he also coached at UVA and Louisville. He spent 2000 as an offensive quality control assistant under his father with the Jets.

In Chicago, Mike Groh inherits a Pro Bowl wide receiver in Brandon Marshall and a talented second-year player in Alshon Jeffery. The position group had largely underachieved before Marshall arrived last season.

He is the second assistant to depart Alabama for the NFL. Offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland left to join Chip Kelly’s staff with the Philadelphia Eagles.
